FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Who can attend security guard training at Securing Communities?
Our BSIS-authorized training is open to the public — no prior registration or prerequisite required. You can book the Initial Course, any Mandatory or Elective class, or the Mandatory Package directly online.
How long does the security guard training take?
The full California BSIS requirement is 40 hours, broken into three parts: the 8-hour Initial Course (Power to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force), 16 hours of Mandatory Skills courses, and 16 hours of Elective courses. You can space these out on your own schedule — the Mandatory courses just need to be finished within 30 days of your guard card being issued, and Electives within 6 months.
How much does guard card training cost?
Pricing depends on which courses you need. The Initial Course is $85. The 4 required Mandatory courses can be booked individually (around $42.50 each) or bundled in our Mandatory Package for $160, which saves you $10.00. Elective courses are priced individually, typically $42.50–$50 each.
What does the training curriculum cover?
It depends on the course. The Initial Course covers the legal powers and limitations of a security officer and use-of-force basics. Mandatory Skills courses cover public relations, incident documentation, communication, and liability. Elective courses round out the rest, covering topics like crowd control, radio procedures, and de-escalation.
Do I need a guard card to work in security in California?
Yes — a California guard card is legally required to work as a security officer in the state. It's issued by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and completing our training class is a required step before you can obtain it.
Can I apply to work at Securing Communities after completing training?
Absolutely — we're always looking for qualified guards to join our team. After completing your training and obtaining your guard card, you're welcome to apply directly with us. Check our careers page for open positions.
