Before BSIS will process your guard card application, you're required to complete this 8-hour Initial Course covering Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force. It's the first step for anyone pursuing a security guard card in California — no guard card or prior registration required to attend.

The legal authority and limitations of a security guard — when and how you can lawfully detain someone.

Appropriate Use of Force (5 hours)

Force guidelines and de-escalation — staying within your legal rights while keeping people and yourself safe.

No prior experience is required. Please bring a valid photo ID, paper, and a pen or pencil. Arrive a few minutes early — late arrivals may not be able to receive credit for the full session.

What Happens After This Class

Once you complete this course, you can submit your BSIS guard card application (a separate $60 state fee applies).

After your guard card is issued, BSIS requires 32 more hours of training within 6 months — our Mandatory Skills Package covers the first 16, and our individual elective courses cover the rest.
