California Guard Card Requirements

Everything you need to know about California's 2026 guard card requirements -including BSIS eligibility and training, Live Scan fingerprinting, and how to get certified in Sacramento.

If you want to work as a security guard in California, you will need to get your Guard Card - getting one involves several specific steps created by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS).

This guide breaks down exactly what’s required in 2026, including recent updates, so you can get licensed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

What is a California Guard Card?

A California guard card is the state-issued registration that legally authorizes you to work as a security guard. Without one, you can’t legally perform security guard duties for a licensed California security company.

The Guard Card is officially called a BSIS Security Guard Registration and is issued through BSIS, which oversees all private licensing in the state.

Who is eligible?

To apply for a California Guard Card, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Pass a criminal history background check through both the California DOJ and the FBI
  • Complete the required BSIS training before submitting your application

Certain felony convictions and violent offenses can disqualify you as an applicant. Non-violent misdemeanors are reviewwed on a case-by-case basis by BSIS.

2026 Training Requirements

Califofrnia’s guard card training requirements were updated effective January 1, 2026 under Senate Bill 652.

Here’s what you need to know.

Initial 8-hour training (required before applying)

All applicants must complete an 8-hour course covering:

  • Power to Arrest (3hours)
  • Approrpiate Use of Force (5 hours)

As of 2026, this training must be competed within 6 months before submitting your application and must be administered and certified by a single BSIS-licensed training provider. You cannot split the trianing between two different providers.

32 additional hours (required after receiving your Guard Card)

Once you received your guard card, you must complete 32 more hours of security officer skills training within your first 6 months on the job:

  • 16 hours within the first 30 days
  • Remaining 16 hours within 6 months

Annual continuing education: After the first year, all registered security guards must complete 8 hours of continuing training annually to maintain their registration.

Can you complete your Guard Card training online?

Some providers offer hybrid formats that combine online coursework with in-person classes.

However, as of January 1, 2026, California’s SB 652 requires that the full 8-hour Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training be administered and certified by a single licensed BSIS provider from start to finish.

At Securing Communities, our training is conducted entirely in-person in Sacramento. This ensures full compliance with 2026 BSIS requirements and gives you hands-on instruction from experienced security professionals.

How to get your California Guard Card - step by step

Here’s the step by step breakdown of how to get your guard card in 2026:

  1. Complete your 8-hour BSIS training througha single licensed provider. This must be done before you can apply - you cannot submit your application first.
  2. Submit your application through the BSIS BreEZe online portal at breeze.ca.gov.
  3. Complete Live Scan fingerprinting using the official Security Guard Request for Live Scan Service form (also found on the BSIS website). You must use this specific form - using the wrong form will delay your application because BSIS will not receive your results correctly. To find your nearest Live Scan location, visit oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations.
  4. Pay the required fees - the current BSIS application fee is $60, plus a separate Live Scan fee of approximately $49 plus the site fee.
  5. Wait for BSIS approval - processing typically takes 2-6 weeks. Once your status shows as “Active” in BreEZe, you can print that confimration and use it as a valid temporary permit while your phyiscal card arrives in the mail.
  6. Complete your remaining 32 hours of training within your first 6 months on the job - 16 hours within the first 30 days, remaining 16 hours within 6 months.

How long is a guard card valid?

A California guard card is valid for two years. It must be renewed before it expires. If your card expires and you don’t renew it within 60 days, it is automatically canceled and you will need to reapply as a new applicant- including re-completing the training again.

The BSIS renewal fee is $44 for cards renewed before expiration.
